Alister Graham Kirby ( April 14, 1886 in Brompton, west London - March 29, 1917 in France ) was a British rower who competed in the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm , Sweden .
Kirby was born to Arthur Raymond Kirby, a Bencher board member at Lincoln's Inn , and his wife Gertrude Fleming. He was educated at Eton College and Magdalen College , Oxford and rowed in the Boat Races for the University of Oxford from 1906 to 1909 . However, he only rowed in the winning team on his last participation in 1909, when he was also president. In 1909 he was president of Vincent's Club , an elite sports club near the University of Oxford. Kirby became a member of the Leander Club and was the captain of the club eight that won the gold medal for Great Britain during the rowing competitions of the 1912 Summer Olympics . In his eighth rowed Edgar Burgess , Sidney Swann , Ewart Horsfall , James Angus Gillan , Leslie Wormwald , Arthur Garton , Philip Fleming and helmsman Henry Wells .
With the outbreak of World War I, he was accepted into the London Rifle Brigade , a volunteer unit of the British Army , and promoted to the rank of captain . He died of an illness in France in 1917 at the age of 30 and was buried in a war cemetery in Mazargues near Marseille .
