Edwin Graves

Edwin Darius Graves Jr. (born July 10, 1897 in Chesapeake City , Maryland , † April 29, 1986 in Scituate , Massachusetts ) was an American rower .

Graves was eighth in the United States Naval Academy in 1920 . This figure eight represented the United States at the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp . The eighth won in the preliminary round with a lead of sixteen seconds against the Belgian team, in the semi-finals the Americans prevailed against the French crew with eighteen seconds. With a narrow margin of 0.8 seconds, the crew won the final ahead of the British eighth.

At the time of the Olympic victory, Graves had already completed his studies at the Academy, but remained in Annapolis until the end of the rowing season. Then he hit the officer career. By the time Graves left the Navy in 1950, he had achieved the rank of captain .
