William Fields (rower)
William "Bill" Beauford Fields (born August 6, 1929 in Forsyth , Georgia , † November 20, 1992 in Gainesville , Georgia) was an American rower .
William Fields was a cadet at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis and a member of the academy's eighth . This eight was nominated for the 1952 Olympic Games . In Helsinki, the US eight reached the final undefeated, where he won with over five seconds ahead of the Soviet and Australian boats. It was the seventh consecutive Olympic victory for the American eighth since 1920.
Fields belonged to the eighth of the Academy until his graduation in 1954 and also won the title of the Intercollegiate Rowing Association in the two years after the Olympic victory . After his graduation, Fields was an officer in the US Navy , and in 1977 he retired as Commander of the Navy.
