history
The grant for Walden was proclaimed on November 6, 1780 and awarded on August 18, 1781 to Moses Robinson and others. In January 1789, Nathaniel Perkins and his family moved to Walden, and they were the town's only residents for three years. The town organized itself on March 24, 1794. The settlement of the town began on the Bayley-Hazen Military Road , where there was already a log house from the time of the American Revolutionary War .
The name Walden is believed to come from Major Walden, who had a log cabin built on Bayley Hazen Military Road in the winter of 1779–1780 to protect the men who worked on the road. The log house is still there today. Some historians believe the town was named after another New England Walden. A reference to the naming can be found in the Grant von Salem, today the area is divided between Derby and Newport. A Joseph Waldren is mentioned here, the name Walden would also be possible.
Walden station was on the Lunenburg – Maquam railway line .
