history
The Grant for Ryegate was given by Benning Wentworth on September 8, 1763 as part of the New Hampshire Grants to 94 people under the leadership of Richard Jenness (also Jennes or Jennis). The grant comprised 20,492 acres (8,292.8 hectares ). The town was named after Jenness' home. This came from Reigate in Surrey . This name for the town can be found in some old maps of the region. Many of the beneficiaries of this grant sold the land, and in 1773 it belonged to John Witherspoon, President of Princeton University and signatory of the United States Declaration of Independence .
In 1772, farmers from Counties Renfrew and Lanark in Scotland joined forces to colonize land in America. They sent David Allen and James Whitelaw to purchase land for settlement. They bought an area south of Ryegate from Witherspoon. From 1773 the area was settled by the Scots and except for Aaron Hosmer and his family all settlers came from Scotland at that time. Another group from Scotland reached America in 1774, but they got caught up in the American War of Independence . Upon arriving in Boston, they were given the choice of either adding to the British arms, settling in Nova Scotia , or going back to Scotland. Some moved to Nova Scotia, many returned to Scotland, and it was only after the War of Independence that more settlers from Scotland reached Ryegate.
