Geographical location

Stannard is in the northwest of Caledonia County, in the Green Mountains . Several smaller tributaries of the Lamoille River flow through the west of the town and in the east there are tributaries of the Joes Brook . There are several small lakes in the town area, the largest being Stannard Pond . The surface of the town is hilly, the highest point is the 796 m high Ide Mountain .

Stannard was founded on August 9, 1867. Named after George J. Stannard of Georgia , a Civil War general who fought in the Battle of Gettysburg . The area was previously known as Goshen Gore Number 1 and was given town status by the Vermont Legislature Act.

Stannard is part of the Orleans Southwest Supervisory Union with Hardwick, Craftsbury and Greensboro in Orleans County, Wolcott in Lamoille County and Woodbury in Washington County . Stannard does not have its own school, the closest in the school district is Hardwick Elementary School in Hardwick. It offers classes from kindergarten to sixth grade for 260 schoolchildren. The Hazen Union High School also in Hardwick serves about 350 students from the seventh to the completion of high school in the twelfth grade.
