Caledonia County is a county in the state of Vermont in the United States . The county seat is in St. Johnsbury .

The county is located in northeast Vermont, borders New Hampshire to the southeast and has an area of 1,703 square kilometers, of which 18 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Orleans County , Essex County , Grafton County, New Hampshire, Washington County , Orange County, and Lamoille County .

The county had a population of 29,702 as of the 2000 census . There were 11,663 households and 7,895 families. The population density was 18 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.48% white, 0.29% African American, 0.55% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.01% Pacific islander and 0.23% other ethnic groups; 1.07% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.68% of the population.
Of the 11,663 households, 32.40% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 53.60% were married couples living together, 10.40% were single mothers. 32.30% were not families. 25.60% were single households and 11.00% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.95.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.30% of residents under 18 years of age, 8.80% between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.30% between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.30% between 45 and 64 years of age 14.40% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 97.50 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 94.50 males.
The median income for a household in the 34,800 USD , and the median income for a family was 42,215 USD. Males had a median income of $ 30,438 versus $ 21,973 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,976. 12.30% of the population and 9.00% of families are below the poverty line. 16.60% of them were under 18 years of age and 10.00% were 65 years of age or older.

In addition, there are six census-designated places for statistical purposes : Barnet, Danville, East Burke, Groton, Hardwick and St. Johnsbury as well as the Unincorporated Village East Hardwick, East Ryegate, Lower Waterford, Lyndon Center , McIndoe Falls, Passumpsic and West Danville.
