Bennington County is a county in the state of Vermont in the United States . Bennington and Manchester share the county seat .

The county borders Massachusetts to the south and New York to the west and has an area of 1,755 square kilometers, of which 4 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Rutland County , Windsor County , Windham County , Franklin County, Massachusetts, Berkshire County (Massachusetts), Rensselaer County (New York), and Washington County (New York).

The county had 36,994 people as of the 2000 census . There were 14,846 households and 9,917 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.75% white, 0.42% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.62% Asian, 0.01% residents from the Pacific island area and 0.21% from others ethnic groups; 0.80% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.93% of the population.
Of the 14,846 households, 30.50% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 53.10% were married couples living together, 10.10% were single mothers. 33.20% were not families. 26.80% were single households and 11.60% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.91 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.70% residents under 18 years of age, 7.70% between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.30% between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.70% between 45 and 64 years of age 16.70% were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 92.20 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 87.90 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 39,926 , and the median income for a family is $ 46,565. Males had a median income of $ 31,982 versus $ 23,632 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,193. 10.00% of the population and 7.00% of families are below the poverty line. 13.40% of them were under 18 years of age and 7.90% were 65 years of age or older.
