Rupert is located in the northwest of Bennington County, on the border with New York State in the Green Mountains . There are only a few small rivers in the area of ​​the town, they flow into the White River or the Mettawee River . The highest point in the hilly area is the 1,023 m high Mother Myrick Mountain .

history

The Grant to Rupert was awarded on August 20, 1761 as part of the New Hampshire Grants . It comprised 23,040 acres (9,324 hectares ). The settlement started in 1767, the first settlers were Isaac Blood, Reuben Harmon and Oliver Scott. Oliver Scott also built the first grist mill.

The town of Wentworth was named after Ruprecht von der Pfalz, Duke of Cumberland , who had died at the time the grant was awarded, but was highly respected by the British.

Reuben Harmon, one of the early settlers, was a blacksmith and was given the right to mint coins for the young Vermont Republic in 1785 . His coin was in the east of Rupert on a small river.

The Vermont State Route 315 leads from west to east through the town. It connects Rupert with Salem in the west. In the east of the town it joins Vermont State Route 30 , which leads north to Pawlet and east to Dorset. In the west, Vermont State Route 153 branches off north to West Pawlet. The Castleton – Eagle Bridge railway had a station in Rupert.

There is no hospital of its own in Rupert. The closest competent hospital is the Rutland Regional Medical Center in Rutland.

Rupert is part of the Bennington-Rutland Supervisory Union with Danby, Dorset, Manchester, Langrove, Londonderry, Mt. Tabor, Pawlet, Peru, Sunderland, Weston and Winhall . There is no school of its own in Rupert. Rupert's school children attend schools in Pawlet or Dorset.
