history
The present Readsboro Parish was founded on April 24, 1770 as Readesborough with a New York patent. The town was named after the owner of the patent, John Reade. The spelling of the town has varied since its inception. One spelling was Reedsborough . The town is also referred to as Reedsberry in some State Archives records . There were other patents for parts of the area and also a New Hampshire Grant in favor of Major Robert Rogers. However, the town was eventually established after the New York patent.
The West Readsboro area was renamed Heartwellville in 1852 in honor of John Hartwell, a prominent resident.
The Hoosac Tunnel and Wilmington Railroad reached Readsboro in 1885. The route was changed several times, as several dams were built in the mountains. The route was badly damaged by the New England hurricane of 1927 and then rebuilt. When another dam was to be built for the Bear Swamp Reservoir in 1971, the railway line should have been relocated again. For cost reasons, the route was not relocated and operations were discontinued in 1971.
