history

The Grant for Searsburg was given on February 23, 1781 by Thomas Chittenden and the Vermont Republic to William Williams and twenty-seven others. It covered an area of 10,240 acres (4,144 hectares ).

In Grant, Searsburg was still spelled Searsburgh , the h was dropped in the course of time. The town was created by separating the northern part of Readsboro. The reason for this is not known. It wasn't until about 20 years later that the town was surveyed by John Marks, and settlement started around 1822 when Benno Davis cleared a strip of land. It is reported that Samual Hollman was the first settler to be there in 1812, but there is no record of this. It is not known what the name Searsburg comes from. Possibly wanted the legislature of Vermont to honor the New York merchant Isaac Sears.

The constituent assembly took place on March 18, 1833. The town benefited from the construction of the Searsburg Turnpike from Wilmington to Bennington in 1830 and was able to grow to more than 200 residents. A hotel was also built. This burned down in 1871 and was not rebuilt. Several mills were built in the following years.

In the south of Searsburg there is a six megawatt wind turbine owned by Green Mountain Power. It consists of 11 windmills and is part of a research facility for wind energy. Another plant, including some in the Town Readsboro area, consisting of 15 turbines is planned.
