plant

In the compositions of their drawings, the artist couple Markus Muntean and Adi Rosenblum use methods of sampling and resampling of subjects from art history and contemporary popular culture. An intensive examination of the pathos formulas of art history and the questioning of how emotions and affects that are expressed through them are articulated and interpreted differently in different epochs form a starting point. Motifs, as we know them from passion cycles, are applied to psychological dispositions of contemporary existence and partly to express an apathy that appeals to the empathy of the other person. The aim is to transfer historically overwhelming image subjects into the present, which at the same time trigger a discussion about media conditions through which images are produced today. By taking up language and writing, another level penetrates the picture in the drawings by Muntean / Rosenblum, which gives insights into the complexity of the challenges that a subtle medium like drawing has to face today. Muntean / Rosenblum also deal with the aspect of a nomadic narrative. In relation to the scenic compositions, the text collages form aphorisms that pointedly counteract popular culture phrases and awaken a double consciousness through their paradoxical connection with figural representations.
