Berlin Biennale

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Berlin Biennale for contemporary art is an exhibition of international contemporary art that has been sponsored by the Federal Cultural Foundation since 2004 as a top cultural institution. It was launched on March 26, 1996 by Klaus Biesenbach , who is now director of the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles , and a group of collectors and art lovers. The Berlin Biennale takes place every two years at different locations in Berlin . Since this exhibition was established, the Board of Trustees has chosen an annual leitmotif, such as “When Things Cast No Shadow” for the 5th Berlin Biennale.

The organizers had opened their own gallery ( Gagosian Gallery ) in Auguststrasse , in which the first works were presented six months before the start of the Biennale. Eleven different locations have already been used for the actual exhibition, including the Old Garrison Cemetery and the Hall of Mirrors in Ballhaus Mitte .

The 5th Berlin Biennale was curated by Adam Szymczyk and Elena Filipovic and was held from April 5 to June 15, 2008 at four different locations, including the Neue Nationalgalerie at the Kulturforum in Berlin-Mitte.

The 6th Berlin Biennale took place from June 11th to August 8th, 2010 and was curated by Kathrin Rhomberg . As a foretaste of this biennial, the Artists Beyond project, funded by the European Commission , started in January 2010 , which aims to present artistic work as a process of creation in public events. Seven artists were involved in Artists Beyond in Amsterdam, Istanbul, Pristina, Copenhagen, Vienna, Paris and Berlin .

The 7th Berlin Biennale was held from April 27th to July 1st in 2012 and was curated by Artur Zmijewski . Associate curators were Voina and Joanna Warsza. During the preparation period, the organizers created their own newspaper, the P / Act for Art: Berlin Biennale Zeitung .

The 8th Berlin Biennale took place from May 29 to August 3, 2014 and was curated by the Colombian-Canadian artist and art historian Juan A. Gaitán . He previously worked as a curator at the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam (January 2009 to December 2011) and as associate professor of the program for curatorial practice at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco (September 2011 to June 2012) . Gaitán has invited Tarek Atoui , Natasha Ginwala, Catalina Lozano, Mariana Munguía, Olaf Nicolai and Danh Vo as central members and advisors to collaborate in his artistic team.

The 9th Berlin Biennale took place from June 4 to September 18, 2016. Lauren Boyle, Solomon Chase, Marco Roso and David Toro from the New York collective DIS were appointed to the curatorial team.

The 10th Berlin Biennale took place from June 9th to September 9th 2018 and was curated by Gabi Ngcobo and her team Nomaduma Rosa Masilela, Serubiri Moses, Thiago de Paula Souza and Yvette Muttumba. With the title We Don't Need Another Hero , the 10th Berlin Biennale saw itself as a dialogue with artists and other contributors. The participants grapple with the ongoing fears and worries of today - fears that are multiplied by disregarding complex subjectivities - and think and act in their confrontation beyond the art context.
