The Saatchi Gallery is a contemporary art gallery in London in 1985 by Charles Saatchi opened. The passionate art lover made his extensive collection accessible to the general public.

From 1985 to 2002 the gallery was housed in an old paint factory in north London, and has moved twice since then. In the spring of 2003 Saatchi moved his collection to the former seat of the London City Parliament, the County Hall on the Thames, which he gave up in 2006 after disagreements with the Japanese landlord. The gallery reopened on October 9, 2008 with an exhibition area of 50,000 m² in the former headquarters of the Duke of York, it is located on King's Road in the Chelsea district near the Sloane Square underground station . Entry to all exhibitions is free for visitors.

Saatchi's role in the art world is extremely controversial. It oscillates between admiration for his artistic vision and the suspicion of deliberate manipulation against the background of his career as an advertising magnate. The artists on offer include representatives of the Young British Artists , whose establishment as a group Saatchi played a significant role, such as Jake and Dinos Chapman , Damien Hirst , Tracey Emin , David Batchelor and Jenny Saville , but also German artists such as Franz Ackermann and Jörg Immendorff , Matthias Weischer , Jonathan Meese , Albert Oehlen and Julian Rosefeldt . Sensation was an exhibition by the Young British Artists from 1997 that was disputed from the collection of Charles Saatchi and attracted a great deal of attention.

The County Hall gallery was visited by approximately 600,000 people annually. Up to 2006 it was visited by 1,000 school classes.

On May 24, 2004, a fire destroyed many plants. The damage is estimated at £ 50 million.

YourGallery - Saatchi Art

Since 2006 there has also been a virtual art gallery called Saatchi Art , which - according to the FAZ - forms the largest virtual art market for artists, gallery owners and museums.

The virtual gallery ( YourGallery ) recorded around 80,000 exhibitors in March 2008, but the majority of them are not professional artists. Anyone interested can set up a free internet presence there with their work.
