The Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) is a museum for contemporary art . It was founded in 1984 as the Center for the Fine Arts and was named Miami Art Museum in 1996. In 2013, it was renamed again and moved to a new building on Biscayne Boulevard in Downtown Miami , Florida, designed by architects Herzog & de Meuron . Together with the Patricia Frost Museum of Science and a city park, the PAMM forms the Museum Park (formerly Bicentennial Park).

In the first four months after the opening of the new museum building, it counted more than 150,000 visitors. The museum originally assumed more than 200,000 visitors to the new location in the first year. The previous location on Flagler Street averaged 600,000 visitors a year.

history

Miami-Dade Cultural Center

The former museum building

The Center for the Fine Arts opened in the Miami-Dade Cultural Center, built in 1983, a building based on the Spanish colonial style . It was the first of three buildings on a $ 24 million complex planned by Philip Johnson . Next to the museum on West Flagler Street was the HistoryMiami History Museum and the Miami-Dade Public Library. The opening was delayed by more than a year due to the renovation of the smoke ventilation system for the complex. The six million dollar arts center initially only showed temporary exhibitions. It only started buying works of art in 1996. The Miami Art Museum (MAM) was founded in 1996 because the exhibition and storage rooms proved to be too small.

Jorge M. Pérez Art Museum of Miami-Dade County

In November 2010, construction began on a new MAM building in Museum Park in Downtown Miami. It was built according to plans by the Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron , who were commissioned by museum director Terence Riley in 2009. The architecture is based on buildings in Stiltsville, where various wooden houses stand on stilts off the coast of Key Biscayne . An area next to the new Miami Science Museum building in the redesigned Bicentennial Park was chosen as the location. The three-story building of the MAM has an internal and external area of 200,000 square feet. The exhibition halls have floor-to-ceiling windows that can illuminate the exhibits with daylight. A large flight of stairs connects the museum with the nearby promenade. Thick, noise-absorbing curtains separate areas of the stairs for events. The building is secured against hurricanes and floods and offers sufficient shade and ventilation. The museum also has a number of hanging gardens designed by French botanist Patrick Blanc. The new MAM building was opened in December 2013.

To build the new $ 131 million museum building, MAM entered into a public-private partnership with the City of Miami and Miami-Dade County . The property on Biscayne Bay was provided by the city. The total cost was $ 220 million, of which 100 million came from Miami-Dade in the form of bonds and 120 million from private patrons. By 2011, private individuals had also donated more than 50 million for the building and the furnishings of the institution. Jorge M. Pérez, a longtime board member and collector of Latin American art, offered a donation of $ 35 million over ten years to support the new museum, which was renamed the Jorge M. Pérez Art Museum of Miami-Dade County.

Controversy over renaming

The renaming of the museum to the name Pérez sparked a great deal of controversy. Many board members of the museum resigned in protest. They argued that the new name is permanent, with no release clause, and that the city of Miami provided land for the museum. City and county taxpayers would have paid $ 100 million for the funding, compared to a $ 40 million donation from Pérez. In addition, there were repeated concerns that the new name could discourage further potential donors, which could harm the intended growth of the museum's collection.

architecture

The architects Herzog & de Meuron received positive reviews for their building design. The Wall Street Journal pointed out that the architecture could help make the museum a travel destination and the New York Times described the design as "spectacular." In 2015 the Pérez Art Museum Miami received an architecture award from the America Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA).

collection

The museum began building its own art collection in 1996. The focus is on art of the 20th century and contemporary art. The collection areas include works from North and South America, Western Europe and Africa. When the new building opened, the museum owned 1,800 objects. Almost 500 of these were purchased in 2013 alone, including works by John Baldessari , Ólafur Elíasson and Dan Flavin . The permanent exhibition features works by Purvis Young, Joseph Cornell , Kehinde Wiley , James Rosenquist , Frank Stella and Kiki Smith . The collection largely consists of donations. 110 works came by Jorge M. Pérez, such as pictures by the Cuban painters José Bedia Valdés and Wifredo Lam as well as the Mexicans Diego Rivera and Damian Ortega, the Uruguayan Joaquín Torres-García and the Colombian Beatriz González. In 2013 board member Craig Robins pledged 102 paintings, photographs, sculptures and other works from his personal collection as a further foundation.

In 2012, Perez donated $ 500,000 to a fund to purchase African American art, which the Miami-based John S. and James L. Knight Foundation joined. In 2014 the museum set up an ambassador program for African American art and encouraged donors to donate directly to this fund.

Artist protest

In February 2014, the Miami artist Máximo Caminero destroyed a colored vase by the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei . He was protesting against a lack of exhibitions with local artists at the Pérez Art Museum Miami. The vase was estimated to be worth a million dollars. Caminero was then arrested and charged with property damage . The museum expressed understanding for the freedom of expression, but at the same time condemned the act as a vandalistic act against another artist and his work. In March 2014, Caminero's attorney pleaded not guilty. Caminero then admitted guilty and was given 18 months probation and 100 hours of community service. He was banned from the house for the duration of the suspended sentence.
