Somerset Schoolhouse

The grant to found Somerset went to 62 settlers and the town was founded on September 9, 1761. The first land buyers probably did not know much about the local conditions when they bought the land. The area of the town is located in the Green Mountains and is very inaccessible. Even today there is only one road that comes from the south to the Somerset Reservoir and some holiday homes, as well as a forest path.

Benning Wentworth named the town either after the Dukes of Somerset or after the county of Somerset in England . Few families settled in Somerset, in 1850 over 300 people lived there. There was never a village or a cluster of settlements. In 1937 the town of Somerset was dissolved by the Vermont Legislature and declared an Official Wilderness . Three people still live in Somerset today.
