history
Whitingham was founded on March 12, 1770. Nathan Whiting , who in 1767 had written a petition regarding the settlement of the area to the acting governor of the province of New York , Cadwallader Colden , received a grant for the area with twelve other people.
The Village Jacksonville was granted independent rights in 1905. It was initially known as New Boston , later as Martin's Mills . It was renamed Jacksonville in honor of President Andrew Jackson. Settlement began in this area in 1808. Favored by its location on the fast flowing North River, the first mills were built here, and Jacksonville developed into the economic center of Whitingham Town.
