history
Westminster is one of the oldest parishes in Vermont. Founded in 1734 as Township No. 1 (sometimes called New Taunton ) under the administration of the Massachusetts Bay Colony , it was permanently settled from 1751. During the reign of George II , today's US Highway 5 was laid out, which at the time was also intended as a parade ground for the military. History was made in the County Court House, which was in Westminster from 1772 to 1778. The most important meeting that took place there was the meeting in 1777, at which the Vermont Republic was proclaimed. Two years earlier, the so-called Westminster Massacre struck the courthouse during riots that ultimately resulted in the declaration of independence. One man was killed and another seriously injured.
The Village Westminster was given separate rights in 1907.
The center of the village is listed on the National Register Historic Districts .
