history
The town was founded on May 3, 1780 by Governor Benning Wentworth in the wake of the Vermont Charter proclamations ; the settlement took place from Massachusetts. The reason for the naming of the town is not known; the first mention of the place speaks of Ath a ns instead of Ath e ns , so that the city of Athens does not necessarily have to be the namesake. Originally about twice as large as it is today, the southern half of the settlement area declared in 1780 was split off on November 30, 1794 and declared an independent town of Brookline . Between 1827 and 1907 the municipality had its own post office.
