James M. Shafter

James McMillan Shafter (born May 27, 1816 in Athens , Vermont , † August 29, 1892 in San Francisco , California ) was an American attorney , judge and politician who was Secretary of State of Vermont from 1842 to 1849 .

Life

James M. Shafter was born in Athens on May 27, 1816. He graduated from Wesleyan University and was admitted to the bar. In the Vermont House of Representatives Shafter was the Whig Party elected deputy with 20 years already. In 1841 he won the election for Secretary of State. He held this office from 1842 to 1849. In 1850 he moved to Sheboygan , Wisconsin . Shafter ran unsuccessfully for Wisconsin in the United States Congress in 1852 . From 1850 to 1856 he was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly and its speaker in 1851 . When elected District Court Justice in Wisconsin in 1855 , he turned it down and moved to California in 1856.

There he opened a law firm with his brother Oskar Shafter in 1858. He was a member of the California Senate for San Francisco County from 1862 to 1864. In 1862 he was also President pro Tempore of the Senate. During this time he was also the President of the Senate pro tempo. He bought land in Marin County and founded the city of Inverness . There he was also a landowner, farmer and raised cows and horses. As a delegate, he attended the California Constitution Convention in Sacramento in 1878. Shafter was a judge in the San Francisco Superior Court from 1889 to 1890.

Shafter was married to Julia Hubbard. The couple had three children.
