Charles W. Porter

Charles W. Porter (born July 11, 1849 in Hartford , Vermont , † August 1, 1891 in New Bedford , Massachusetts ) was an American lawyer and politician who was Secretary of State of Vermont from 1884 to 1890 .

Life

Charles Walcutt Porter was born in Hartford, Vermont, on July 11, 1849, to Judges John Porter and Jane Frances Foster. He attended school in Hartford, then the Kimball Union Academy in Meriden , New Hampshire . He graduated from Phillips Academy .

Back in Vermont, he moved to Montpelier and studied law with BF Fifield. He was admitted to the bar in 1874. He then founded a joint practice with CH Pitkin, his former instructor. This legal association was maintained until 1880, after which he worked without a partner until his death.

Porter was a member of the Vermont sister party of the Republican Party and was appointed Deputy Secretary of State in 1872. He held this office for twelve years. In 1884 he was elected Secretary of State. Appointed President of the Berlin Granite Company in 1887 . He held this position until his death in 1891.

He was a congregationalist and a member of the Vermont Historical Society.

Charles W. Porter was married to Florence Bailey. The couple had a daughter. Porter died of malaria on August 1, 1891, in New Bedford, where he was recreating . His grave is in the Green Mount Cemetery.
