George Nichols

George Nichols (born April 17, 1827 in Northfield , Vermont , † 1912 ibid) was an American doctor and politician who was Secretary of State of Vermont from 1865 to 1884 . He was President of Norwich University from 1885 to 1895 .

Life

George Nichols was born in Northfield to James and Annie A. Nichols. He attended public schools and Newbury Seminary in preparation for college to study medicine, but was unable to do so for financial reasons. Before he turned fifteen, he started working as a teacher. In 1848 he was appointed State Librarian by Governor Carlos Coolidge and re-elected in elections until 1953.

He then studied medicine at Vermont Medical College, Woodstock , graduating in 1851. At the same time he combined this with a pharmacy and opened the Old Corner Drugstore in Northfield in 1854 . He led this until it was sold in 1898.

He served as a surgeon in the American Civil War in the 13th Vermont Volunteer Infantry until 1863. From 1865 to 1884 he was Secretary of State of Vermont. As a member of the Vermont sister party of the Republican Party , he was a member and president of the Constitutional Convention in 1870. As a delegate, he attended the National Republican Convention in 1872 and was a member of the National Republican Committee. He was also a member and Secretary of the Republican State Committee since that year. He was elected director in 1868 and President of Northfield National Bank in 1874. He was the curator of Norwich University from 1866 to 1907, treasurer from 1866 to 1875 and president of the university from 1885 to 1895. Nichols was regularly elected to various public offices and, with a few exceptions, was the regular moderator of the annual city assembly since 1854.

Nichols married Ellen Maria Blake on April 8, 1852. The couple had two children, both of whom died in childhood. Nichols died in Northfield, Vermont in 1912. It is not known where his grave is located.
