Thomas Chandler junior
Thomas Chandler Jr. (* 23 September July / 4 October 1740 greg. In Woodstock , Colony of Connecticut , † May 22, 1798 in Chester , Vermont ) was a Vermont colonial leader who was also the founder of Chester. He was Speaker of the Vermont House of Representatives . In addition, he was the first Secretary of State of Vermont.
Life
Thomas Chandler Jr. was born as the son of Thomas Chandler sen. and Elisabeth Chandler were born in Woodstock, Connecticut. The younger Chandler was named Chester Town Clerk at the founding meeting in 1763. This charter was held in Worcester , Massachusetts . He held the office until 1765. He worked again as town clerk from 1777 to 1779.
Chandler was a civil judge and justice of the peace from 1766 to 1775 . He held this office during the land dispute over the New Hampshire Grants under the auspices of the Province of New York . After the Westminster Massacre , Chandler resigned as he sympathized with the party that rejected New York's claims.
During the American Revolution , he served as a Superior Court judge and was one of the Vermont sequestrations commissioners responsible for the confiscation of Loyalist property for the Vermont government.
Chandler served in the militia and rose to the rank of major . In 1778 he was elected to the Vermont House of Representatives. His term lasted until 1781. In March 1778 he was elected Secretary of the House of Representatives and thus Secretary of State , the first to hold this position.
Chandler was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives in October 1778, a position he held until 1780. From 1779 to 1780 he was also a member of the Governor's Council . He returned to the House of Representatives for another term in 1787.
Serious illness of several family members in the early 1790s put Thomas Chandler Jr. in financial trouble. He successfully petitioned the government in favor of bankruptcy law .
Thomas Chandler was married to Sarah Chandler († 1764). The couple had five children.
Chandler died in Chester on May 22, 1798.
