John Smith

John Smith (born August 12, 1789 in Barre , Worcester County , Massachusetts , † November 26, 1858 in St. Albans , Vermont ) was an American politician . Between 1839 and 1841 he represented the fourth constituency of the state of Vermont in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Smith was the father of Worthington Curtis Smith (1823-1894), who should represent the third constituency of Vermont in the US House of Representatives between 1867 and 1873. The elderly Smith attended his homeland public schools and then moved to St. Albans, Vermont. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1810, he began to practice his new profession in St. Albans. He was also a district attorney in Franklin County between 1826 and 1832 .

Politically, Smith became a member of the Democratic Party founded by Andrew Jackson . From 1827 to 1837 he was an MP in the Vermont House of Representatives , serving as its president from 1831 to 1833. In 1838 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the fourth district of Vermont . There he took over from Heman Allen on March 4, 1839 . But since he was not confirmed in the following elections in 1840, Smith could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1841 .

After the end of his time in Congress, Smith became involved in the railroad business, where he also devoted himself to expanding the rail network. He died in November 1858 in St. Albans and was buried there.
