Luther Jewett

Luther Jewett (born December 24, 1772 in Canterbury , Windham County , Colony of Connecticut , † March 8, 1860 in St. Johnsbury , Vermont ) was an American politician . Between 1815 and 1817 he represented the state of Vermont in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Luther Jewett attended Dartmouth College in Hanover ( New Hampshire ) until 1795 . After studying medicine, he began to practice as a doctor in Putney . Politically, he joined the Federalist Party , for which he was elected to the Vermont House of Representatives.

In the 1814 congressional elections, held nationwide, Jewett was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC . There he took over from William Strong on March 4, 1815 . Jewett served only one term in Congress until March 3, 1817 . After his political activities in the federal capital Jewett studied theology . After he was ordained a minister, he held that office in Newbury from 1821 to 1828 . He then returned to St. Johnsbury, his previous home. There he published the newspaper "Farmers Herald" between 1828 and 1823. From 1830 to 1832 he also published the newspaper "Free Mason's Friend". After that he did not hold any further public offices. He died in March 1860 in St. Johnsbury and was buried there.
