James Fisk

James Fisk (born October 4, 1763 in Greenwich , Hampshire County , Province of Massachusetts Bay , † November 17, 1844 in Swanton , Vermont ) was an American lawyer and politician who represented the state of Vermont in both chambers of Congress .

Life

Fisk was born in Massachusetts and taught himself his school knowledge. He fought in the Revolutionary War from 1779 to 1782 and was elected to the Massachusetts General Court , Parliament of Massachusetts , in 1785 . In 1798 he moved to Barre , Vermont, where he worked as a lawyer in the following years. He entered the Vermont House of Representatives for the first time in 1800 , and was a member until 1805. He later belonged to it again from 1809 to 1810 and 1815. As a Democratic Republican , he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1804 and confirmed in 1806, but in the 1808 election he was defeated by his opponent. In 1811 he was re-elected, in Congress he was chairman of the election committee.

From 1815 to 1816 he served as a judge on the Vermont Supreme Court . In the election for the successor to the resigned US Senator Dudley Chase , Fisk was able to prevail and again move into Congress. He was a member of the United States Senate from November 4, 1817 to January 8, 1818, after which he also resigned from office.
