Horatio Seymour (politician, 1778)
Horatio Seymour (born May 31, 1778 in Litchfield , Connecticut , † November 21, 1857 in Middlebury , Vermont ) was an American politician of the Democratic Republican Party , the National Republican Party and the United States Whig Party . From 1821 to 1833 he sat for the US state Vermont in the US Senate .
Life
Seymour was born in Litchfield, Connecticut. There he attended public schools. In 1797 he joined a law -Studies at Yale University from. He then worked as a teacher in Cheshire . In 1800 he was admitted to the bar. He opened his own law firm in Middlebury, Vermont. Between 1800 and 1809 he was postmaster at Middlebury. He was then a member of the State executive council until 1814 .
From 1810 to 1813 and again from 1815 to 1819 he was District Attorney in Addison County .
In 1820 Seymour ran as a candidate for the Democratic Republican Party as US Senator for Vermont. After the successful election, he represented Vermont in the Senate. During his first term in office, he moved to the National Republican Party. In 1826 he was re-elected. In 1832 he no longer ran for office. Instead, he ran as a candidate for the United States Whig Party for governor of Vermont, but unsuccessfully. After the unsuccessful candidacy, he returned to his law firm.
From 1847 to 1856 he was a judge at the Probate Court .
Seymour was married to Lucy Case. They both had three children. Seymour was also the uncle of Origen S. Seymour and the great-uncle of Edward Woodruff Seymour . Seymour died in Middlebury in 1857. He was buried there in the West Cemetery .
