Jonathan Robinson

Jonathan Robinson (born August 11, 1756 in Hardwick , Worcester County , Province of Massachusetts Bay , †  November 3, 1819 in Bennington , Vermont ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Republican Party ) who founded the state of Vermont in the US -Senate represented.

At the age of five, Jonathan Robinson moved to Vermont from Massachusetts with his parents. The family settled in Bennington. His older brother Moses held the office of town clerk there from 1762 , the highest official of the city; he later became governor of Vermont and was also a member of the Senate for the state. Jonathan, 15 years his junior, began his political career in 1789 as an MP in the Vermont House of Representatives . He then became active in law: he studied law , was admitted to the bar in 1795 and shortly afterwards appointed to the Guardianship Court of Vermont. In addition, like his brother Town, he became a clerk of Bennington.

In 1801, Robinson was appointed Chief Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court , after which he resigned from his other public offices. In 1807 he resigned as a judge to take a seat in the US Senate. He ended the term of office of Israel Smith , who had stepped down from office. In 1809 Robinson was confirmed for a further six years, after which he did not run again. As a result, he acted again as a guardianship judge, which he remained until the end of his life; In 1818 he was also re-elected to the House of Representatives of his state.
