Warren Austin

Warren Robinson Austin (born November 12, 1877 in Highgate Center , Vermont , †  December 25, 1962 in Burlington , Vermont) was an American diplomat and politician .

biography

After attending Brigham Academy in Bakersfield , he studied law at the University of Vermont at Burlington from 1895 to 1899 and then worked as a lawyer. At times he was a member of the board of directors of the American Judicature Society . Austin, who was a member of the Republican Party , began his political career in 1909 when he was elected mayor of St. Albans . He served as the University of Vermont's curator from 1914 to 1941, and in 1917 was a brief judge at the United States Court for China , a federal court with jurisdiction over US citizens living in China .

In 1931 Austin became the successor to Frank C. Partridge US Senator and represented the interests of Vermont in the United States Senate until 1946 . In 1947 he was appointed Ambassador to the United Nations in New York by US President Harry S. Truman . This post he held until the end of Truman's tenure in 1953, when he then Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. was replaced.

Austin was also involved in social and socio-political issues throughout his life and has been a member of the Rotary Club of Burlington since 1922 . In 1931 he became a member of the American- Greek Society for Progressive Education ( American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association ). He later became a member of the Alfalfa Club, an exclusive club in Washington, DC , in 1932 , and of the Washington-based Alibi Club in 1938.
