John Alfred Scali (born April 27, 1918 in Canton , Ohio ; died October 9, 1995 in Washington, DC ) was an American journalist and diplomat .

Life

John Scali grew up in Boston. He studied journalism at Boston University (BA). He started at the Boston Herald and United Press’s Boston office . He worked for 17 years as a correspondent for the Associated Press at various locations and from 1961 as a journalist for ABC News . In 1962 he was the contact person of the Soviet Embassy in Washington with the US administration during the Cuban Missile Crisis and helped to end the crisis.

In the presidency of Richard Nixon from 1971 Scali was one of the presidential advisers. Nixon appointed him Ambassador of the United States to the United Nations in 1973 , which was criticized by the American professional diplomats. He returned to ABC in 1975 and worked there until his retirement in 1993.
