politics

In the course of the Buddhist crisis , Henry Cabot Lodge jr. Appointed by Kennedy as the new ambassador in Saigon with the task of bringing the Vietnamese President Diệm "to his senses" or to look for an alternative to him. Documents that have since been released show that American intelligence services actively brought about the overthrow and murder of Diệm. Until then, it was claimed that Lodge had only signaled to a few disaffected military officers that the US had no objection to a coup . This then led to a military coup , in the course of which Diệm tried in vain to win the support of the US ambassador Lodge. He pretended not to be able to interfere in the internal affairs of South Vietnam. Diệm was initially able to escape, but was picked up by search parties and murdered.

Cabot Lodge (1964)

In 1964, Lodge surprisingly won the first Republican presidential election in New Hampshire against Barry Goldwater and Nelson Rockefeller , but hesitated too long to give up his ambassadorial post in favor of the campaign. He held this position until 1967; then he was ambassador to Germany from 1968 to 1969. In 1969, President Nixon appointed him negotiator in the Paris peace negotiations . Between 1970 and 1977 he was the United States' special envoy to the Vatican .
