George Cabot
George Cabot (* 3. December 1752 in Salem , Province of Massachusetts Bay ; † 18th April 1823 in Boston ) was an American politician of the Federalist Party , of the state of Massachusetts in the US Senate represented.
George Cabot first attended Harvard College for two years , which he then left to go to sea. At the age of 21 he was the captain of his own ship. His political career began in 1775 with membership in the Massachusetts Provincial Congress . Two years later he was a delegate to the state's constitutional convention. In 1787 Cabot was a member of the State Assembly that ratified the United States Constitution. In 1788 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
In the early days of the United States, George Cabot was included in the Pro-Administration faction, the political wing of the Founding Fathers that supported the policies of the George Washington administration . As a party member of this group, he was elected to the US Senate in 1790, to which he belonged from March 4, 1791 until his resignation in 1796; meanwhile he had joined the Federalist Party.
In 1798 Cabot was nominated as Secretary of the Navy ; however, he renounced. In 1814 he was a delegate to the Hartford Convention . At this gathering, the New England states demonstrated their opposition to the British-American War and even considered secession .
George Cabot, who died in Boston in 1823 and was buried in Cambridge , was the great-grandfather of Henry Cabot Lodge , who represented the State of Massachusetts in the US Senate as did his grandson of the same name .
