Eli P. Ashmun

Eli Porter Ashmun (born June 24, 1770 in Albany , New York Province, †  May 10, 1819 in Northampton , Massachusetts ) was an American politician ( Federal Party ) who represented the state of Massachusetts in the US Senate .

Career

Eli Ashmun was born in a small Hudson River village north of Albany. He attended local schools and later Middlebury College , which he graduated from in 1807. At that time he was already politically active: from 1803 to 1804 he was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives . After completing a law degree , Ashmun was inducted into the state bar and began practicing law in Blandford . During this time his son George was born, who later also became a politician and sat for Massachusetts in the United States House of Representatives from 1845 to 1851 . Ashmun's wife Lucy died in 1812 at the age of 37.

In 1807 Ashmun moved to Northampton, where he continued his legal practice. From 1808 to 1810 and in 1813 he was a member of the Massachusetts Senate ; In 1816 he was part of the advisory board of the Governor ( Governor's Council ). After the resignation of US Senator Christopher Gore , Eli Ashmun was elected as his successor. He performed his mandate in Congress from June 12, 1816 until his own resignation on May 10, 1818. The following year he died in Northampton.
