Isaac C. Bates
Isaac Chapman Bates (born January 23, 1779 in Granville , Hampden County , Massachusetts , † March 16, 1845 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician who represented the state of Massachusetts in both chambers of Congress .
After receiving private tuition as a boy, Isaac Bates attended Yale College , where he graduated in 1802. After joining the Bar, he began practicing as a lawyer in Northampton in 1808 . That year began his political career with membership in the Massachusetts House of Representatives ; he stayed there until 1809.
However, it was a few years before Bates became politically active again. On March 4, 1827, he moved for the National Republican Party in the House of Representatives of the United States and remained there after several re-elections until March 3, 1835, before he did not run again. After the resignation of US Senator John Davis , he returned to Congress on January 13, 1841; meanwhile he had joined the Whigs . He also won the election for a separate term of office, but died before it ended in March 1845 in Washington. During his tenure in the Senate, Bates was, among other things, chairman of the pension committee.
