Torbert "Torby" Hart Macdonald (* 6 June 1917 in Everett , Massachusetts ; † 21st May 1976 in Bethesda , Maryland ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party and long-time member of the US House of Representatives from Massachusetts .

Life

After attending Medford High School in Medford and Phillips Academy in Andover , he studied at Harvard University and was a roommate of John F. Kennedy during his studies . In 1940 he completed his studies with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and then began postgraduate studies in law at Harvard Law School.

In 1942 he interrupted his studies in order to do his military service in the US Navy like John F. Kennedy as commander of a PT speedboat in the southwestern Pacific Ocean during the Second World War between 1942 and 1944 . During the war he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart .

In 1944 he married the former girlfriend of Cary Grant and Howard Hughes , Phyllis Brooks , who worked as a film actress in several film productions. At the same time he continued his studies and graduated in 1946 with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.). After a brief stint as a lawyer in Boston , he joined the National Labor Relations Board in 1948 , an independent US agency that is responsible for the implementation of the most important US labor law, the National Labor Relations Act .

In 1954 he was elected as a candidate for the Democratic Party for the first time as a member of the House of Representatives of the United States and initially represented the 8th congressional electoral district of Massachusetts from January 3, 1955 to January 3, 1963 . He was then elected to the United States House of Representatives in the 7th congressional electoral district of Massachusetts and was a member of this from January 3, 1963 until his death.

In addition, he was in 1960, 1964 and 1968 delegate to the Democratic National Conventions for the establishment of the Democratic presidential candidate. Ed Markey's successor as Congressman was after his death .
