Margaret Mary O'Shaughnessy Heckler (born June 21, 1931 in New York City , New York - † August 6, 2018 in Arlington , Virginia ) was an American diplomat and politician of the Republican Party , who was both MPs in the House of Representatives and Minister of Health the United States was.

biography

After attending school, she first studied at the University of Leiden , then at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven , where she earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1953 . A subsequent postgraduate study of law at the Law School of Boston College she completed in 1956 with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.). During her studies she was editor of the Annual Survey of Massachusetts Law . Once admitted as a lawyer in the state of Massachusetts in 1956 she spent several years working in this profession. Between 1962 and 1966 she was a member of the Governor's Council , an advisory body to the governor of Massachusetts .

She began her political career in 1964 and 1968 as a delegate to the Republican National Convention . In 1966 Margaret Heckler was first elected as a member of the US House of Representatives from Massachusetts , where she represented the 10th congressional electoral  district of her state. In the nomination for the first candidacy, she was able to prevail against the long-standing MP Joseph William Martin , who was also spokesman for the House of Representatives twice . After seven re-elections, she was a member of the House of Representatives from January 3, 1967 to January 3, 1983. In 1982 she was defeated by her Democratic challenger Gerry Studds .

After her defeat, she was on 9 March 1983 by US President Ronald Reagan to the Minister of Health (US Secretary of Health and Human Services) in the Cabinet appointed and has held this cabinet post until December 13, 1985th

She was then from December 17, 1985 to August 1989 as the successor to Robert F. Kane Ambassador of the United States to Ireland ; then Richard A. Moore took over this post. Margaret Heckler was next as trustee (Trustee) of the Caring Institute operates. Then she retired from political life and settled in Wellesley .
