Leverett Saltonstall (politician, 1783)

Leverett Saltonstall (born June 13, 1783 in Haverhill , Essex County , Massachusetts , †  May 8, 1845 in Salem , Massachusetts) was an American politician . Between 1838 and 1843 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Leverett Saltonstall received a good education. He then studied at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire and then until 1802 at Harvard University . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1805, he began to work in this profession in Salem. At the same time he embarked on a political career. In 1820 he ran for the US House of Representatives without success. That same year he was a delegate to a meeting to revise the Massachusetts Constitution . In 1824 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . Between 1813 and 1834 he was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives on several occasions. In the years 1817 and 1819 and again from 1831 to 1832 he was a member and from 1831 President of the State Senate . Between 1836 and 1838 he was mayor of the city of Salem. In the 1830s he became a member of the Whig Party .

After the resignation of MP Stephen C. Phillips , Saltonstall was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC at the by-election due for the second seat of Massachusetts , where he took up his new mandate on December 5, 1838. After two re-elections, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1843 . From 1839 to 1841 he was chairman of the Department of Navy's Expenditures Control Committee. From 1841 he headed the craft committee. The period after 1841 was marked by tension between President John Tyler and the Whigs. In addition, a possible annexation of the Republic of Texas , which has been independent of Mexico since 1836, was already being discussed.

In 1842, Leverett Saltonstall was not reconfirmed. For this he was re-elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives two years later. Between 1835 and 1845 he was an overseer on the board of directors of Harvard University. He died in Salem on May 8, 1845. Leverett Saltonstall was the great grandfather of Leverett Saltonstall (1892-1979), who was among other things governor of Massachusetts and US senator .
