Lewis D. Apsley

Lewis Dewart Apsley (born September 29, 1852 in Northumberland , Northumberland County , Pennsylvania , †  April 11, 1925 in Colón , Panama ) was an American politician . Between 1893 and 1897 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1861, Lewis Apsley moved to Lock Haven with his parents , where he attended both public and private schools. He later moved to Philadelphia and began his career in the rubber goods trade. From 1877 he lived in Massachusetts, where he manufactured rubber clothing in Hudson from 1885 . In the following years he became president of several companies active in this branch. He also chaired the Hudson City Commerce Committee and became a director of the Hudson National Bank . Politically, he joined the Republican Party .

In the congressional election of 1892 Apsley was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Massachusetts , where he succeeded Joseph H. O'Neil on March 4, 1893 . After a re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1897 . From 1895 he was chairman of the crafts committee. In 1896 Apsley declined to run again for Congress.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, he resumed his previous activities in Hudson. He was twice vice chairman of the Republican National Congressional Committee . Lewis Apsley died in Panama on April 11, 1925 and was buried in Hudson.
