Joe Moakley
John Joseph "Joe" Moakley (born April 27, 1927 in Boston , Massachusetts , † May 28, 2001 in Bethesda , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1973 and 2001 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .
Career
After elementary school, Joe Moakley served in the US Navy from 1943 to 1946 during World War II . From 1950 to 1951 he studied at the University of Miami in Florida . After studying law at Suffolk University Law School in Boston and being admitted to the bar in 1957, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1953 and 1963 he was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives ; from 1964 to 1970 he was a member of the State Senate . In August 1968 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago . From 1971 to 1973 he was a member of the Boston City Council. In 1970 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress .
In the 1972 congressional election , Moakley was elected as an independent candidate in the ninth constituency of Massachusetts to the House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Louise Day Hicks on January 3, 1973 . After 14 re-elections as a candidate for the Democratic Party, he could remain in Congress until his death. Between 1989 and 1995 he was chairman of the internal rules committee . During his term of office, the end of the Vietnam War and the Watergate affair fell among other things . He died in Bethesda on May 28, 2001.
