George F. Williams

George Fred Williams (born July 10, 1852 in Dedham , Norfolk County , Massachusetts , †  July 11, 1932 in Brookline , Massachusetts) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1893 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Williams first attended private schools. He then graduated from Dedham High School in 1868 and Dartmouth College in Hanover ( New Hampshire ) in 1872 . He then studied in Germany at the University of Heidelberg and the Humboldt University in Berlin . In his home country he worked for some time as a teacher and then as a newspaper reporter in Boston . He also became a member of the Dedham School Board. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1875, he began practicing this profession in Boston. He also published several legal yearbooks. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1890 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Massachusetts .

In the congressional election of 1890 Williams was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of Massachusetts , where he succeeded John W. Candler on March 4, 1891 . Since he was not confirmed in 1892, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1893 . In 1895, 1896 and 1897 he was an unsuccessful candidate for his party for the gubernatorial elections in Massachusetts. Otherwise he worked as a lawyer in Boston.

In 1896, 1900, 1904 and 1908 Williams was a delegate to the respective Democratic National Conventions . He also attended various regional Democratic party conventions in Massachusetts. From 1913 to 1914 he was the successor of Jacob Gould Schurman as the American envoy to Greece and Montenegro . He then continued to practice law until 1930. He died on July 11, 1932 in Brookline near Boston.
