Martin Thomas "Marty" Meehan (born December 30, 1956 in Lowell , Massachusetts ) is an American lawyer and politician . Meehan is currently President of the University of Massachusetts .

biography

Meehan, the eldest of seven children in a Catholic family, attended school in Lowell and attended Lowell High School , which he graduated in 1974. He then went to the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. There he received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1978 . Meehan then studied further at Suffolk University and the law school there , where he received a doctorate in law. Meehan was already politically active when he was a student. From 1978 to 1979 he served on the Lowell Mayor Support Team. From 1979 to 1981 he was James Shannon's press secretary . After completing his law degree at Suffolk University Law School , Meehan was Director of Public Relations with the Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth and Deputy Secretary of State for Securities and Corporations from 1986 to 1990 . From 1987 to 1988, Meehan was a faculty member of the University of Massachusetts at Lowell at Harvard Law School . Meehan was the First Assistant District Attorney for Middlesex County in 1991 and 1992 .

In 1992, Democrat Meehan won a seat in the United States House of Representatives in the general election . In January 1993 he took up his mandate. Meehan was re-elected in each of the following years. Meehan stood in Congress for a reform of election campaign finance in the United States ( Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act ). He also advocated the repeal of the military service instruction Don't ask, don't tell and advocated the unrestricted admission of homosexual soldiers to the armed forces.

On July 1, 2007, Meehan resigned from Congress and became a Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. On July 1, 2015, he took over the presidency of the University of Massachusetts system as the successor to Robert Caret . He has been married to Ellen T. Murphy since 1996; they have two children.
