Charles L. Underhill
Charles Lee Underhill (born July 20, 1867 in Richmond , Virginia , † January 28, 1946 in New York City ) was an American politician . Between 1921 and 1933 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .
Career
In 1872 Charles Underhill came to Somerville , Massachusetts with his parents , where he attended public schools. He then worked there as a blacksmith and ironmonger . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1902 and 1918 he sat several times as a member of the House of Representatives from Massachusetts . In 1917 and 1918 he was a delegate at a meeting to revise the state constitution .
In the 1920 congressional election , Underhill was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of Massachusetts , where he succeeded Alvan T. Fuller on March 4, 1921 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1933 . From 1925 to 1929 he was chairman of the Committee on Claims ; from 1929 to 1931 he headed the Committee on Accounts . In 1932 he renounced another candidacy.
After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Charles Underhill worked in the Washington real estate business until 1941. After that, he retired. He died in New York on January 28, 1946.
