Jonas Sibley

Jonas Sibley (born March 7, 1762 in Sutton , Worcester County , Province of Massachusetts Bay , †  February 5, 1834 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1823 and 1825 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jonas Sibley attended public schools in his home country. In the years 1801 to 1803 and again in 1819 he was a councilor in his home town. From 1802 to 1827 he worked there as a town moderator ; from 1806 to 1816 he acted there as city treasurer. Sibley was a member of the Democratic Republican Party . From 1806 to 1822, and again from 1827 to 1829, he was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives . In 1820 he was a delegate to a meeting to revise the Massachusetts Constitution . In the 1820s he became a follower of John Quincy Adams and Henry Clay .

In the congressional election of 1822 , Sibley was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Massachusetts , where he succeeded Samuel Lathrop on March 4, 1823 . Since he was not confirmed in 1824, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1825 . In 1826, Sibley was a member of the Massachusetts Senate . After that he was again in the House of Representatives of his state until 1829. He also worked in agriculture at the time. He died on February 5, 1834 in his native Sutton.
