John W. Candler

John Wilson Candler (born February 10, 1828 in Boston , Massachusetts , †  March 16, 1903 in Providence , Rhode Island ) was an American politician . Between 1881 and 1883 and again from 1889 to 1891 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Candler attended Marblehead Academy and Dummer Academy in Massachusetts. Later he worked in the trade. Among other things, he maintained trade relations with the East and West Indies and with South America. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1866 he became a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives . Candler also served as chairman of the Massachusetts State Prison Commission. He also became President of the Boston Chamber of Commerce and the Commercial Club of Boston .

In the congressional election of 1882 Candler was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eighth constituency of Massachusetts , where he succeeded William Claflin on March 4, 1883 . Since he was not confirmed in 1882, he could initially only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1883 . In the elections of 1888 Candler was re-elected to the Congress as the successor to Edward Burnett in the ninth district of his state, where he was able to complete a further legislature between March 4, 1889 and March 3, 1891. In 1890 he was not re-elected again.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, John Candler resumed his previous trading activities. In 1893 he retired. He died in Providence on March 16, 1903 and was buried in Cambridge .
