Seth Moulton Wilbur (* 24. October 1978 in Salem , Massachusetts ) is an American politician of the Democrats . Since January 2015, he has represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1997 Seth Moulton graduated from Phillips Academy in Andover . He then studied physics at Harvard University until 2001 . Between 2001 and 2008 he served in the United States Marine Corps , where he was promoted to captain and served four times in the Iraq war . In the meantime he returned to Harvard, where he studied administration until 2011. Professionally, he was Managing Director of the Texas Central Railway for some time . Then he became president of Eastern Healthcare Partners .

In the 2014 House of Representatives election , Moulton was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the sixth congressional electoral district of Massachusetts , where he succeeded John F. Tierney , whom he defeated in his party's primary on January 3, 2015 . In the actual election he won with 54 to 41 percent of the vote against the Republican Richard Tisei . Since he was confirmed in office in 2016, he is also a member of the 115th Congress of the United States , which met on January 3, 2017 . His new legislative term runs until January 3, 2019 with the option of a further candidacy in 2018.

His political style is described as less consensus-oriented than usual for a New England Democrat. Shortly after his entry into Congress in 2015, he turned against President Obama's plan for an increase in troops in Iraq and, at the end of 2016, supported MP Tim Ryan in his (failed) attempt to replace longtime group leader Nancy Pelosi . Moulton was then accepted into the leadership of the Democrats in Congress in 2017 as the senior whip of Whip Steny Hoyer and sent to the important defense committee . Moulton also works for his party's initiatives to better reach millennials and to work across party lines in Congress. In January 2017, Moulton caused a stir when he spoke out against the decree of the new US President Donald Trump to suspend immigration from countries with a Muslim majority (see Executive Order 13769 ). Moulton is seen by observers as the future leader of the Democratic Party and was brought up in the spring of 2017 as a possible presidential candidate for the 2020 election . Moulton announced his intention to run in the Democratic primary election relatively late in April and ended his candidacy in late August 2019 after not qualifying for the television debates. He said he wanted to run for his seat in the House of Representatives again.
