Chester Greenough Atkins (born April 14, 1948 in Geneva , Switzerland ) is an American politician and former Democratic Congressman for Massachusetts .

Career

Atkins attended Concord-Carlisle High School in Concord (Massachusetts) until 1966 and Antioch College until 1970 . On the Antioch campus he was able to perceive a strong progressive politicization in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In 1970 he was elected as a Democrat to the Massachusetts House of Representatives and is still the youngest ever elected MP. From 1972 to 1984 he was a member of the State Senate . He was a member of the Senate Ways and Means Committee . From 1977 to 1990 he was chairman of the Massachusetts Democratic State Committee .

When James Shannon decided to run for the Senate seat of Paul Tsongas , who had resigned due to illness, Atkins successfully ran for a seat in the 99th Congress in 1984 as a Democrat . He took office on January 3, 1985 and was after several re-elections until January 3, 1993 for Massachusetts a member of the House of Representatives of the United States . In the 1990 election, he only just won in the Democratic-safe fifth congressional electoral district of Massachusetts. Fearing that the seat could go to the Republicans , the Democrats nominated Marty Meehan as a Democratic candidate in this district in 1992 . Atkins' last campaign was also overshadowed by allegations of check fraud and financial mismanagement against him. His wife Cory, with whom he had separated several years earlier, later became a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives in his district.

Atkins founded ADS Ventures, Inc. in 1993 , which provides consulting services and lobbying. Atkins currently resides in Cambridge .
