James Shannon (1983)

James Michael Shannon (born April 4, 1952 in Methuen , Massachusetts ) is an American politician . Between 1979 and 1985 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Shannon attended the public schools in Lawrence and then until 1969 the Phillips Academy in Andover . This was followed by studies at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore until 1973 . After completing a law degree at George Washington University in Washington, DC and being admitted to the bar in 1975, he began working in this profession in Lawrence. At times he was on the staff of Congressman Michael J. Harrington . Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . In the 1978 congressional election , Shannon was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington in the fifth constituency of Massachusetts, where he succeeded Paul Tsongas on January 3, 1979 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1985 .

In 1984 he renounced another candidacy for the US House of Representatives. Instead, he unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination for the US Senate elections . After his tenure in Congress, James Shannon returned to practice as a lawyer. Between 1987 and 1991 he was the successor to Francis X. Bellotti Attorney General of Massachusetts. In August 2000, he took part as a delegate at the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles , at which Al Gore was nominated as a presidential candidate; in 2002 he became chairman of the board of the NFPA , the federal association for fire protection.
