James Carr (politician)
James Carr (born September 9, 1777 in Bangor , Massachusetts , † August 24, 1818 in the Ohio River near Louisville , Kentucky ) was an American politician . Between 1815 and 1817 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Born in what is now Maine , James Carr was the son of Congressman Francis Carr (1751-1821). He attended the public schools in his home country and later served for some time on the ship USS Crescent . For two years he acted as secretary to the American consul in Algiers . Upon his return, Carr worked in commerce in the Maine district of Massachusetts. He became a member of the Federalist Party . Between 1806 and 1811 he was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives . In the congressional elections of 1814 he was in the 17th electoral districtwas elected by Massachusetts to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Abiel Wood on March 4, 1815 . Until March 3, 1817 he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress .
James Carr died on August 24, 1818 under dramatic circumstances. He was on a steamship on the Ohio. Below Louisville, his nine-year-old daughter fell overboard in the river. Carr jumped after her to save her. This attempt failed. Both James Carr and his daughter were killed; their bodies were never found.
