The Roman Catholic parish church of Förolach is dedicated to St. James and is located in the municipality of Hermagor .

Building description

The church, first mentioned in 1331, is a medium-sized, Gothic building. The choir is about the same width and height as the nave and ends in a triangle. The frescoes of St. Christopher and a crucifixion group on the outer south wall, labeled 1521, were uncovered in 1977. The mighty tower on the north side with wall slots and arched sound windows is crowned by an eight-sided pointed helmet. The iron-studded door on the east side of the tower leads into the sacristy. The staircase on the north side of the choir forms the entrance to the tower. The west gallery is accessible through a staircase on the north side and an iron-studded, late-Gothic door. One enters the church through the renewed, ogival west portal.

The groin vault in the four-bay nave is divided between the second and third bay by belt arches . The vaults of the two eastern nave bays date from the 18th or 19th century, the two western and the vestibule were not built until 1927. The wooden west gallery extends over two yokes. The organ was built by Josef Grafenauer in 1847. A retracted, pointed arch, beveled triumphal arch connects the nave and the two-bay choir with a three-eighth end. In the choir, a ribbed vault rests on circular services . The late Gothic tabernacle with a pinnacle crowned keel arch adorned with finials still has an original, Gothic wrought iron grille. The arched portal on the north wall of the choir leads to the sacristy on the tower ground floor. The decorative paintings in the choir date from the 17th century. Pointed arch windows illuminate the interior.

Facility

The high altar , created around 1680, consists of a large aedicule above a high base, a small aedicule with a detached segment gable as an attachment and rich cartilage decoration . The main picture, painted in 1912 by Josef Straka, shows the beheading of the apostle James, the top picture shows the coronation of Mary . The pulpit and the side altars are made in the neo-Gothic style. The 18th century sky is painted at the bottom with angels worshiping a monstrance . The Lenten veil from the first half of the 19th century depicts the Descent from the Cross . The church also features a group of figures with the teaching of Mary , a console figure of St. Augustine carved around 1520 and late Baroque images of the Stations of the Cross .
