Benjamin Brown (politician)

Benjamin Brown (born September 23, 1756 in Swansea , Bristol County , Province of Massachusetts Bay , †  September 17, 1831 in Waldoboro , Maine ) was an American politician . Between 1815 and 1817 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Benjamin Brown enjoyed an academic education. After completing a medical degree and becoming a doctor, he began to work in this profession in Waldoboro. During the Revolutionary War he served intermittently as a doctor in the American Navy. In 1778 he accompanied the future US President John Adams on board the frigate Boston on its journey to France . In 1781 he was briefly captured by the British, from which he was able to escape.

Politically, he became a member of the Federalist Party founded by Alexander Hamilton in the late 1790s . He was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1809, 1811, 1812, and 1819 . In the congressional election of 1814 Brown was then elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 16th  constituency of Massachusetts , where he succeeded Samuel Davis on March 4, 1815 . Until March 3, 1817 he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress .

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Benjamin Brown practiced as a doctor again. He died in Waldoboro on September 17, 1831.
